Super Bowl Sliders: Thin is In

Thinking  about the Big Game inspires me to fire up the grill. I’m always looking for food that is great for parties, easy to eat and satisfying.Checking my fridge, I found a bag of bagels past their prime. They were rock hard- too hard to cut safely, but I had an idea. I heated them in the oven till they softened up. Ten minutes at 300 degrees did the trick.

I reached for The Nicer Slicer and quickly cut each bagel in half, lightly toasted and then re-slicered each piece. Suddenly I had enough buns for 8 burgers. I pulled out about 1 1/2 pounds of ground turkey, mixed with salt, pepper, 1 cup of oatmeal and about 1/4 cup of diced yellow onion. I formed the mixture into 4 regular sized patties.

Then I concocted a sauce from catsup, Worchestershire sauce, soy sauce, ground cumin, dry mustard, brown sugar, hot sauce and apple cider vinegar. (It was really tasty! Go ahead- experiment with whatever you have on hand.) I set some sauce aside to use on the finished sandwiches, basted the burgers and grilled them, rebasting as needed.

Here’s the cool part: I took each turkey burger and slicered it in half to make thin turkey sliders! I sliced them in half horizontally and made 16 little sandwiches, topped with a bit more sauce. They were easier to hold than regular sliders, fun to eat and great game day food. You could add a dab of cole slaw to each sandwich, or a slice of cheese or avocado or any other condiments of your choice. Go, team!
